Leo not laying in egg box ??

herp-keeper Dec 17, 2006 04:59 PM

Hey guys,

This is my 3rd Year breeding leos, all have been successful so far thank g-d. One question however;
My best female, is layihng eggs outside of the egg laying box i put together for them. She lays them near the entrance of the reptile cave (one that goes up against the glass for viewing). It's moist and all inside the box, but she doesn't seem to want to use it.

Any ideas why?

Cheers

A couple of thoughts:
1. Is the lay box over the heat source? Perhaps it's too hot for her liking.
2. Does she deficate in the hide box? I have a couple of females that do.
3. Is the hide box in an area of heavy traffic. You mentioned it's against the glass, perhaps she doesn't fee secure enough in the hide box to lay her eggs.

Easyist solution is to provide an additional hide box on the opposite side of the enclosure. This should help.

Hi,

- A)... and B)... are not issues. She does not, and the hide box is on the opposite side of the cage as the heat. As for the traffic, not really no. It is in the back right corner of the cage.

Note: I have the box and cage in the exact same position as last year, and last year she laid all her eggs in it, nicely.

Thank for the reply

She may have just been a little wierded out coming back to breeding season already. Even though it is not her first year.

Thanks,

Hmmmm. Great response back. So it doesn't seem that anything has changed. Tankmates? I'm still thinking that 2 hides- one on the cold side (like you have) and one on the warmer side might be something you would like to try. How long ago did she lay? Watch her next lay and let us know how it goes.

Yoooooooo,

Thank for replying,

Sorry if I failed to mention, I've had 2 hides (hot and cold) sinse I can remember keeping herps ('bout 10 years). I can't recall the last time I didn't leave them at least 2 hides.
She laid one of the eggs on December 13th, 2006 and the other oddly on December 17th, 2006.

Thanks,

-hk

mine would do that too. it just depends on your gecko. she probably feels more secure in the rock thing.
