size of nest box?

wolfwoman Dec 18, 2006 09:47 AM

Hello all,
My husand and I have 4 snakes in brumation and although it's still eary in the game, we were wondering what size next box to use when the time comes. Our snakes are in 20gal Long tanks.
Is a shoebox enough and do you put it on the warm side of the tank? The books we have do not go into detail about this part of things. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I use a shoebox. If using UTH, I would not put the box over the warm part, as you can easily have the eggs overheat. Here is a setup I have used with a 20-gallon and a shoebox nestbox.

the size of the nest box itself is not really important its more important that their is a proper substrate for the female to deposit her eggs in. i have used sphagnum moss, perlite and vermiculite and all worked fine. the moisture content of each differs but basically i use what ill be using to incubate in. i try to grasp the substrate and sqeeze(sp) out any water all you should get is a drop or two and that should be fine.
