Food ??

stevep Dec 18, 2006 12:05 PM

New at cresteds - I just bought a baby and it is really cool. I do have one dumb question -- How long is peach baby food good for if refrigerated after being opened?? I'm doing mostly dusted crickets but would like to give a little snack of baby food.

Thanks

Steve

The bottle on my counter says only 3 days, but I've used it to about 5 if I don't contaminate the food by spooning it out, but pouring it instead. Also depends on the amount of preservatives in the food, FYI we use organics with only vit C added.

First off, check out the subforum dedicated to cresteds, you'll find almost any question there you could think to ask probably already answered.

But in the meantime, you should really think about crested gecko diet (CGD) by T- Rex. The majority of owners swear by it. It is a complete food, all the vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and fiber your little guy/gal needs. IMHO, the best way to raise a crested is offering CGD (mixed with babyfood initially if they don't partake of the straight diet.) and crickets for extra growth punch. After they reach adult, you can feed only CGD, but we still treat her to a few crickets every week. (Which is probably why she's a bit on the chubby side, but we're trying to fix that too.) I like CGD because it lasts 6 months open on the counter, you just mix with water each serving. I also don't like worrying about her calcium intake, whether the crickets undusted themselves before she caught them for instance.

Welcome to the world of cresteds! Good luck with your little one!

I agree 100% about the Crested Gecko Diet. I started out on babyfood and my babies stayed small. After a month of feeding CGD they shot up like weeds. By far the best stuff on the market!

I third the suggestion for CGD. This is a completely balanced... and easy diet for the cresteds. I too, however, feed crickets occasionally.
Good luck with your crested. (by the way, how do you have any time to play with geckos with the little one in the house

I just ordered some CGD.
And it's easy playing with all the snakes , frogs, turtles and lizards with a baby in the house ... it's my granddaughter!!! I have the best of all worlds!
Thanks for the advice

i currently use the CGD, however, when my crested was a baby she hated it. she would not even give it a first chance. she tried it once, only because i put some on her nose, and avoided it after that. sge would ONLY eat crix, i tried all sorts of baby foods and what-not. through reading alot of forum i have noticed that alot of baby cresteds prefer a more protein rich diet and once the get a bit older they will take to the CGD with no problem. my female now eats CGD and CGD alone. she really doesnt take interest in crix anymore, i gues she likes her food hand delivered.

there is a new food available along the same lines as CGD (produced by the same folks). It uses the same balanced ingredients and combines a base with a fruit flavored powder (several available). My crested geckos absolutely loved this new choice. If anyone is having issues with one of their cresties eating CGD, try the new flavor packs.
Let me know if you cannot find these and I will add a link to a few distributors.

(PS- I'm not selling the stuff, it just works for me)

Thanks for mentioning the new products. I read about them, but wasn't sure about trying them, since they are a bit different. Good to hear they are working for you.

For the record, I guess I should mention that standard CGD is technically "banana" flavored, as bananas are one of the first ingredients and you can really tell if you have a fresh bottle, smells just like mashed fruit.

Another option if the little guys isn't too keen on straight CGD (and it seems most babies aren't) I've had the best luck with apricot or banana organic food, and some luck with peach flavored. Anything with apples in it lacks some of the nutritional value of the other fruit alone as apples are mostly sugar, but then it is like a kid with a candy bar... it isn't the best for them, but you can be assured they'll eat it.

Good thread. And good luck.

I honestly, because I'm a bum ;P, use one jar of babyfood until I feel it's old [[usually they last me about 5-7 days with 2 Juvie cresteds]]. And that's with organic babyfood (no additives :] ). As far as I'm concerned: if it doesn't smell gross, isn't growing anything, and hasn't begun fermenting, it's still good but I won't use the same jar longer than a week.
I've also found they like banana and mango foods best n.n
On that note, I mix CGD with my organic baby food, T-Rex CGD, and like 1/8-1/4 tsp into an entire jar [they are quite small jars]. Rather than using miner-all and such, I just like the CGD better but have found my cresteds won't eat it on its own. Picky little girls :P
