I know many people use a sand/soil mix for indoors. Some people do sand/eco earth mix.

A sand/soil mix is good. It should be topsoil (i.e. not potting compost which has fertilizers and vermiculite in it) and playsand, and mix it together 50/50 or 60 soil/40 playsand. Lots of people in England now use hemp, but I gather this isn't available in the States.
