Temprature gradient for Mex milk

paulnola Dec 19, 2006 01:08 PM

Our Mex's vivarium stays about 65-68 f during the day and 76-80 f at night. 80f is as warm as it will get with an under-glass floor heater and overhead infrared warming bulb.
Should it need to be warmer? I'm sure in the warmer months the ambient temp of our house will be higher, and so will his vivarium.

I would reverse the night/day temps. It should be warmer in the daytime with a nighttime temp DROP. So I would shoot for 80 or so hot spot during the day and perhaps the low 70s hot spot at night. If the snake were digesting, I would probably keep the hot spot a bit hotter ( low 80s) at night, also. Do you have a cooler side so the snake has a choice?

Yes, there is a cool side he can go to.
I have thought about keeping the red infrared heat lamp on during the day as well as at night(only time it is on now). I can try this and see if there is any difference in his behavior.
As it is now, he is never active during the daylight hours, and he wakes up and comes out between 6 and 8pm, goes back in hiding a few hours later and then comes out for a while before dawn and then retires after daylight.
