Puerto Rican Ground Snake

agalinis Dec 19, 2006 06:50 PM

Caught this guy last week while hiking in Guajataca State Forest Preserve in Puerto Rico; I was at about 2100 feet in a karst area. Apparently not too much is known about the life history of these little guys (Arrhyton exiguum) in the wild. I hear they are widespread but not often seen. Had a powerful musk but didn't even try to nip!

Great pics, thanks for sharing. I'm familiar with the Cuban ssp. of Arryhton, but haven't seen the PR form. Much like the Alsophis ssp, common, but hardly encountered in the wild. Did you come across any Puerto Rican Boas (Epicrates inornatus) on your trip? Many people say that they don't occur in the higher elevations, where its cooler and very moist. I found several in El Yunque in one day. :0)

Jay,

Thanks! This is the only snake I saw, much less caught, in PR. I was there largely to surf, but I'm a field biologist so I was hiking all over the place. I barely got the little guy as it was, one more second and he would've been invisible in the leaf litter!

I didn't see the boa, but I didn't hit the right habitat for it.
Next trip I plan to spend an entire day in El Yunque.
