Vision hatchling rack=perfect sheds

EmberBall Dec 19, 2006 07:11 PM

At first glance, maybe the Vision racks do not look all that amazing, but functionally speaking, I could not be happier. I finally put on the side and back guards, and while I am not all that fond of the heat cable, (like heat tape or heat cable with metal cover)everything has worked fine so far. I just had a group of babies all shed at the same time, and every one of the sheds was perfect, all rolled up like a sock I have a Vision adult rack that is empty right now, but plan on using at least two of the shelves for shed/humidity tubs for some of the other adults if they have a bad shed in my open racks.

I am 100% pleased with my Vision hatchling rack. I don't have the sides on mine and have no shed or feeding problems...I have the 60 tub rack... it's completely full and all the snakes are doing great.

Jon, I will second that. Very clean and neat. If the cages are half as clean as the floor,
then I'am sure that they are spotless. Great job.

Happy Holiday

Does everyone use paper towels for babies? If not newspaper or mulch, what other substrates do you use?

I also use the vison cb70 rake and 99.9% of the sheds are perfect. I think mulch helps too.IMO

Those racks look oldschool. I use newspaper with some small water dishes, and the humidity seems perfect, but mulch probably holds the water better. I got some bowls for the hatchling rack that tipped over too often, so my wife found these bowls at Pier One for $1 that are awesome, perfect size, and do not tip. They fit nicely in the hatchling and my yearling rack, and no tips so far. Cannot beat the price, think they are something for fondue or dips, but work perfectly.

The racks Vince posted pics of are Vision's previous aluminum design.

The new black racks use steel poles and are quite a bit "advanced" over the previous aluminum design in almost every way possible.

Both racks had a similar ventilation design which seems to be working quite well at combating shedding problems.

I hate to be the only negative reply so far, but after only about two weeks with my bps set up in a new Vision CB-70 rack (with Vision's versions of the tubs), three went through a shed, two of which had HORRID sheds. Granted, it is winter and the space heater does dry the air slightly - but I am using a radiant heater rather than a forced air heater, so that helps.

You can always increase the size of water dish. I have little water dishes in the hatchling rack, and all sheds have been perfect. I use a space heater at night sometimes too, but an increase in the water dish size might help.

Even our new racks can't compensate for the air drying effect of a forced air heater in the winter.

Under those conditions, you might want to try some wet sphagnum moss or other form of adding moisture when they are in the blue.

No apologies necessary. If you'll notice, I said I'm using a radiant heater, not a forced air heater. I used the forced air method years ago when I first set up my snake room and everyone in any type of enclosure had bad sheds. I switched to those fake electric "radiant heaters" (the kind you usually see against a wall in an old house), and I rarely have bad sheds with it. This was just my experience with that rack though and conditions in each house vary tremendously. It's a nice rack to be sure, my snakes with their newspaper bedding and relatively larger water bowls just didn't want to shed properly in it. As a final aside, I do not regret buying the rack by any means.
