Uh Oh...I think she's a he...help w/ sexing please---gecko crotch pics

Starling Aug 08, 2003 02:36 PM

I think my incubator must have gotten too warm, because I think this het, which I had planned to be female is a he. Gecko is just under 3 months old. Opinions on sex please.

I wonder if a male will be harder to sell. He's het albino, has some nice genes. And big balls for his age lol.

Well, I wouldnt rule out female yet. I have seen females with pretty prominent bulges. What do the pores look like, are they really obvious. Also, my males always had a "waxy" like substance on those pores, that made the pores much more obvious. Also, what sex was her clutchmate??

The pores are quite visible, though not in that pic I know. The clutchmate seems to have bulges too.

You've seen females w/ obvious bulges? Did they go away? At what age can sexing be considered definitive?

None of my females last year had bulges like that.

Yes, i've seen females with bulges. They werent as pronounced as your leo's, but they had them. How old did you say s/he was again??? You might be right and you just had your incubator mess up on you, the bulges are pretty big, I would sell it as unsexed, but that you are leaning toward male.

about three months. I probably won't be selling for another month, hopefully by then it should be definitive...is there a particular age that is supposed to be definitive?

Josh06 Aug 08, 2003 03:45 PM

Not really sure, I have heard 5 months though....

Those are some very large buldges, but the main "kicker" is the presence of pronounced/"deep looking" pre-anal pores (which I don't see in that picture).

When you are sexing geckos it is not a matter of age, but rather size. I can sex 95% of my geckos by 15-20grams, but every now and then you will have a male that does not "bloom" until he is larger.

If you want to be 100% sure then 30 grams is a good target size.

Hopefully "he" turns out to be a "she" for you.

Also, about the difficulty of selling males... it really depends on how many you have to sell. If you only need to sell a few you shouldn't have much of a problem, but if you are extremely male heavy and need to move 100 geckos (80 of which are male) it may be a different story.
