dumbkid Aug 08, 2003 02:43 PM

could everybody help me out?
here are some questions:

-are bananas ok for cham food?

-if my cham basks too much, should i be worried? (stays in the same spot most of the time, never wanders down to the rest of her cage. )

-what should i use for gutload?

-would granola work for gutload? its this organic hemp granola, with a bunch of vitamins. (all THC has been reduced to less than .001%) has a lot of protien, iron and 400mg OMEGA-3's. will use other gutload as well.

-could anybody hook me up with a panther for cheap? (less than $150?) i know its not likely, but just wondering.

-how many crix should i feed her a day?

-what supplements should i use? (brand)

thanks

I can try to help...

Q: are bananas ok for cham food?
A: If you are feeding veiled, they love strawberries and some like grapes (cut in mouth-sized pieces). There is no danger feeding bananas, but be sure to manage the size of pieces, as it is a sticky fruit.

Q: if my cham basks too much, should i be worried? (stays in the same spot most of the time, never wanders down to the rest of her cage. )
A: If she is gravid, this is common. Most chams like to bask in the morning and move off to thermoregulate their temps after they get warm. If you are worried about her overheating - watch for an open mouth - and simply turn the basking lamp off or raise it up a bit. Actually, we have several chams that will stay under warmth for much of the day. Even when the ambient temp in the room is 80F.

Q: what should i use for gutload?
A: We make our own gutload for crickets and superworms. It consists of powdered milk, dry baby cereal; dry dog food; dry fish flakes; nuts and seeds; and herbs. We grind this up into a corse powder and the crix eat it down to the plate! If you would like the receipe, just send us an email.

Q: could anybody hook me up with a panther for cheap? (less than $150?) i know its not likely, but just wondering.
A: I seriously doubt you will find one for this amount - this is usually a wholesale price. Just start saving your loose change - it will add up surprisingly. By the time you get ready for the new panther, you will have the extra funds for it.

Q; how many crix should i feed her a day?
A: This depends on age and species.

Q: what supplements should i use? (brand)
A: Many folks use Miner-All - available at most pet stores
Be wary of over-supplementing tho - some species can develop edema from too much.

Hope this helps,
Morgana

hiya

I had a few questions off of yours: (my cham is a jackson Male)

"If you are worried about her overheating - watch for an open mouth - and simply turn the basking lamp off or raise it up a bit."

Mine actually stays in the same spot all day as well. He opens his mouth from time to time - usually after a misting...he'll sit there and open it. He does not move out of the spot to a shady area I have set for him - does this mean he wants the heat, but is just getting hot and needs a bit of a cool off?

Feeding: I generally give him a bowl of 5 to 8 crickets. He eats the first 3 readily. then basks and wanders around. then comes back and picks them off one by one over the next hour or so. Should I be giving him more - until he refuses to go back? I have "variety foods" coming in the mail tonight as well - so he does not have to snack on chirpers all day long.

Suppliments: I shake the crix every other time. Is that too much? too little?

thanks!

-adam

Hi Adam,

>>Mine actually stays in the same spot all day as well. He opens his mouth from time to time - usually after a misting...he'll sit there and open it. He does not move out of the spot to a shady area I have set for him - does this mean he wants the heat, but is just getting hot and needs a bit of a cool off?

Actually, a couple of my male jacksons do the same... by opening their mouth, they are thermoregulating their bodies. It is more commonly seen in veiled - but the jacksons will do it too. Just be sure the basking spot isn't too hot. Do you have a digital thermometer to place inside the cage in that spot? It should be about 85F in their basking spot.

>>Feeding: I generally give him a bowl of 5 to 8 crickets. He eats the first 3 readily. then basks and wanders around. then comes back and picks them off one by one over the next hour or so. Sounds like you are feeding him enough. Just avoid feeding late at night - our jacksons go hunting first thing in the a.m. Feeding to late can leave undigested food in the system and sometimes in the gular area.

>>Suppliments: I shake the crix every other time. Is that too much? too little?

From what I have been told and have read, jacksons are prone to edema from oversupplementation. We supplement once per week for the males.

Hope this helps some,
Morgana

Stnman,

Actually, we haven't heard about that. We used a small portion of Science Diet kibble in the dry gutload - and we haven't seen any specific problems. We were told that kitten kibble is good too, but we don't have cats.

Please.. if you find it, let me know.
Thanks,
Morgana
