CRB Update (AGAIN)

coluberking25 Dec 20, 2006 01:56 PM

Hey guys first off Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa to everyone.

Sorry for the hiatus. I've been very sick with mono and am finally making a breakthrough in recovery. Well I haven't been able to monitor the guy much while I've been sick, but when I have, the ground temp is now in the low 80s and humidity has dropped slightly. But enough with the boring info...

He/She is now in blue! Bad thing is, he/she looks awfully ugly(like a long gray turd) lol. So apparently everything is going well with the snake.

PS-If my CRB Updates are annoying you or something, please let me know. Thanks.

When his eyes go from blue to normal, he will shed about three days later so make sure his home is a little humid for him so you can get a one piece shed and keep it.

Actually I did check the humidity and it was below 50% so I gave it a little spray and even soaked the hidelog(though the snake hasn't used it I guess because it likes hiding under the sphagnum moss better). Humidity is now about 65%. I'm not used to one piece sheds with boids, as my python constantly doesn't shed in one piece, but rather a ball of skin is the result. What am I saying!?! This is the rainbow boa forum lol.

Scott,
...Good update. Be sure to get plenty of rest with the mono. If the temperature is in the low 80s in the warmer part of the cage that is ideal. If it is in the cooler part of the cage that would be a little too warm. It sounds like you are doing well with this snake. When they shed it can tell you a lot about how they are doing. A healthy Rainbow Boa that is kept at good temperatures with adequate humidity will shed a nice complete skin. It is fine if the shed breaks into two or three pieces but if it comes off in tatters it is usually a sign of inadequate humidity but can sometimes indicate more serious health problems. The shed skin of a Rainbow Boa is not nearly as thick or heavy as the shed skin of a similar size Boa Constrictor or Python.
Happy holidays,
Jeff

Jeff,
I'd like to discuss feeding before it becomes a last-minute issue. This snake is very thick, about slightly less then the diameter of a baseball. However, this snake as a very small head as well. First off, is the small head natural? And secondly, should I feed it large adult mice and rat pups once a week? This guy's head is pretty small(I'll get pics up as soon as I can, probably tomorrow) and I don't want a large old rat ripping his head in half lol.
