What would be a good species for a novice? I have no intention of running out and buying one this moment or even in the next year. A monitor that occupies a 6ft long tank or smaller would be preferable. I would like to stay clear of the larger species, even though I've noticed that large monitors, like the Nile monitor are usually priced lower than others (makes me little curious as to why that is). What are the feeding requirements, general cage setup, and over all temperaments of monitors--particularly the smaller variety? I've heard rumors about monitors having nasty temperaments and being downright vicious. Is this true for only wild caught or do the captive bred fall into this category as well?
The monitors looked like they might make for an interesting pet, but I could be mistaken. So I thought it was best to ask abou their care, temperament, and size in order to see if they are a group of animals that I feel I would be able to handle, eventually.
