color help (male)

AstralDesign Dec 20, 2006 11:58 PM

just rescued a couple of corns in not the greatest shape. Need a little help determining their colors. I was told they are 3 years old, fed 2 live mice or 1 small live rat every 3 to 4 weeks. These poor things were so hungry, they gobbled down a frozen/thawed large mouse in minutes. (male had a small rat)

here are some pictures of the male

He's a normal motley pattern corn.
Appears to have some dorsal striping so 'striped-motley' would also be an acceptable name for his type.

Kudos to you for nursing them back to good health.
Corns are great feeders so I'm sure it won't take long to get them back to a proper weight.

Good Luck.

LOL I understood what you meant.

I thought 'normal' but he's under side is absent of any checkboarding and is totally white. So I was leaning towards bloodred.

I just love the strip motley pattern

could this not be a bloodred stripe? It has a bit of difussing in the sides, and is real red in color. A normal stripe would be more brown.
Either way, you got some REALLY nice looking snakes. I wonder why someone would pay so much for snakes (bloodreds are not cheap) and then treat them so badly. I would have gladly taken them off their hands, and so would have many others. Hope you do well with them

so one adult mouse is normal? because my brat eats 2 large adult mice every friday and well he'd eat three if i let him. I don't want him getting overweight so I only feed him two for the moment. He's about 4.5 feet long, maybe a couple inches longer and as big around as C battery now. He's got an amazing feeding response, he never turns down a meal. Even when he's shedding he'll eat. He's realy well tempered too, which surprises me because I haven't had much time for handling lately with my work schedule on the holidays. I'm puttin in about 55 hours a week. anyway, i was just curious.

I generally feed my adults two mice a week, but I think most only feed one. During breeding season, or in your case where the snake is uncer weight, more feedings would be better to get the snake up to weight.

I was thinking bloodred as well. Definitely a Motley stripe.

Personally, I do not think the guy did the research in order to properly take care of these snakes. I think he wanted the best for them, which proves since he gave them up. But he was not very knowledgeable and did not seem to want to take that extra step. He referred to their color as Albino, which obviously they are not. He got them in trade for tattoo work.

Seeing that snake just made me think of a silly question. If you have a very mal-nourished snake or just one extremely small. If they gain weight too quickly can they suffer something similar to a heart attack? I would hate to have a rescue go the way of Karen Carpenter......

see, that is something I do not know. I plan on doing one meal every 7 days and go from there. My goal isnt to power feed them. I just want to get them on a normal feeding routine.

I think that is a good sound way to go.
Please keep us updated.
I think you will see some nice changes as they gain weight and go through a few sheds.
Good luck
