CA law-import of amphibians

catweazle Dec 21, 2006 02:06 AM

This forum is a great. I found a post from someone called Jason which helped me very much with CA law. Thanks. Maybe somebody can help me with my question. Is it allowed to import from other US states to CA european amphibians? I already searched the DFG and other public legal internet sources but only found the RESTRICTED SPECIES LAWS AND REGULATIONS / IMPORTATION, TRANSPORTATION AND POSSESSION OF WILD ANIMALS - MANUAL 671 which refers to Title 14 Sect. 671 which lists Bufo marinus, Bufo paracnemis, Bufo horribilis, all species of the Genus Xenopus and all species of the genus Ambystoma (tiger salamanders) as restricted. A friend of mine claims that it is totally illegal to import european newts and salamanders such as salamandra s. or triturus into CA. Is it possible that such species although not explicitly mentioned in the cited manual are forbidden by reference to other statutes or laws (e.g. regulations adopted pursuant to Sect. 2189 "Importation of Nonnative Wild Animals" of the above mentioned manual) ? I just moved to CA recently and am thinking to buy a CB salamander as a pet. Most breeders which offer animals are outside CA. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you so much. Regards

It is my understanding you need nothing to import non native species from state to state. You do however need import/export licencing to import or export native species.
