Too Quiet

PHRatz Dec 21, 2006 09:00 AM

It is getting that way around here. I know everyone is very busy with the holiday weekend coming up. I know I am but I hate to see it get too quiet here just because it's a holiday & so many boxies are sleeping their days away for winter.

How about this.. how many box turtles do you have & what other pets do you have?
I have 6 box turtles
1 sulcata tortoise
1 yellow mud turtle
1 western painted turtle
1 lovebird
1 African fat-tailed gecko
1 Argentine horned frog
3 hermit crabs
2 TX tan tarantulas
and only 3 rats left
plus 1 blk & tan weenie dog
Lotsa bugs I won't count as pets, a homeless calico cat who drops by for a meal now & then- also not a pet.
A husband I won't count as a pet either
what about the rest of ya?

Does the picture below give you a clue?

We actually did this card three years ago.

My beloved tortoise shell cat, Chrissy, died two days
after Christmas '03, at the ripe old age of
18. We now have a three year old torti persian, Jenny, and
a 2 1/2 year old russian blue, Tucker, that we adopted
at petsmart.

The beta fish WAS dead when we took the photo.
My spouse went into my daughter's room to take
the fish's portrait and it was floating. Daughter
wanted the photo taken anyway.

The dogs are still with us, but the setter is REALLY
getting old. Severe arthritis, incontinance, but the
internal organs seem to be doing ok. Setter is Lindsey,
Black dog is Max, and the Collie is, you guessed it,
Lassie.

The bearded dragon, "Caveman" was a youngster in '03,
he is a big three year old now.

The five lined skink, Geico, is four years old.

The brown snake (storea dekay)has moved on to the next
world, life, whatever.

The box turtles are juvies that I was keeping in that winter,
all are hibernating now. The red eared slider also now
hibernates in his pool that has a heater in it to keep the
water from freezing. It was so warm earlier this week, he
was out sunning

The cockatiel, Spunky, is six year old and we also have a
white parakeet that my daughter found one cold november day
in the carpool line (some idiot parent had released it), my
daughter's teacher helped her catch Spice and she brought
the bird home in her lunchbox. Fortunately, we had an extra
cage.

We still have the bunnies, Smokey and Fluffy. Fluffy, the
brown bunny, is eight years old and in great shape. Smokey
is five years old.

The praying mantid lived another month or two and is one
of several that I have kept. I love mantids.

I won't go into the lobster roaches, superworms and mealworms.
The herps have a Christmas dinner of crickets and wax worms
arriving via fedex tomorrow morning.

Oh my gosh Lisa lol quite a crowd!
I LOVE that card though. We got a family photo card from DH's boss & when I opened it I thought geeze we ought to do that with the tortoise & the dog.. but that leaves everyone else out. I hadn't thought about making one like you made until I saw your photo.
That's a great idea for next year! Thanks for posting it
We have photos of everyone, why not create a card on computer instead of taking a photo to one of those places that will make your card for you. No we should do it ourselves!
I have a whole year to work on it now LOL!

Thanks! I was hesitant to post it, but
have been posting for five years here so I
thought "what the heck!".

I would love to do another one like this, this year
its all we're going to be able to do to get a picture
of the kids tonight and get some cards out by New Years.

Anyway, my hubby, who is a whiz with photoshop, came up
with this as a way to get the ENTIRE family in the card.

Off to the mall for awhile (ugh!)

Yeah what the heck.. I'm glad you posted it. I have got to get DH in here to see it to give him some ideas. He is the whizzy one on the computer not me.
I just love that card.
The mall.. we passed the mall last night at around 8:40PM- the parking lot was crammed full of cars, I can imagine it's a nightmare today.
I'll be passing it again today but not stopping lol.
Hope you made it out of your mall alive!

Well, I tried to get to the mall as early in the day as I could and I actually went to one that isn't the closest, but I knew the parking "secrets" during the holidays (ie: at this particular mall, go to the top of the parking garage and go in through Penny's or Macy's....I ended up just a few feet from Macy's door!).

Hopefully, I don't think I'll have to go to a mall anymore, just to Target and Walmart for a few things.

I am now sweating out my herps Christmas dinner!
I guess the storm in Denver is screwing up all the shipping companies.

I ordered my crickets, waxworms and mealworms from a very good company in the state next door and down one...next door to your state, and I got notification that it had shipped via fedex for overnight priority delivery. I come home from shopping late yesterday afternoon and no bugs!

I check the tracking and there is nothing on the tracking other than the box was picked up thursday afternoon. So I get on the phone with fedex (hint for future reference...don't go through all the menu options when something hasn't arrived...just say "claims" and you'll get a human on the phone in no time.)

Anyway, I finally find out that while the tracking said it had been picked up, it really hadn't been picked up and they had actually just picked it up and it would be out for Saturday delivery.

So, I check tracking just a little while ago and it shows that my package of live bugs is just sitting at the sort facility at the airport, and its 12:00 pm, which tells me that they aren't even planning to deliver my bugs until Tuesday.

Now, I have some sort of customer relations liason trying to track down my package and get it to a local station so I can pick it up there, which means I can't go anywhere until I hear from them....aughhh!

I think it must be a result of the Denver airport having been shut down for so long.

I buy and sell on ebay, and I have several packages that I paid for well over a week ago and they still aren't there, and the same goes for stuff I've shipped.

terryo Dec 22, 2006 05:09 PM

I hope that was your Christmas card, because it was soooooooo great!!!

I was wondering about your red-ear slider. I haven't put mine outside and was thinking of putting a pond outside in the Spring for her. Do I need mud on the bottom for her to hibernate? How does that work for sliders?

LisaOKC Dec 22, 2006 09:45 PM

Well I have three of mine in the largest plastic wading pool you can usually find at a Walmart or Toysrus.

There isn't any mud, although I've always wondered if I should add some, but there are plenty of leaves, etc., at the bottom.
Mud probably isn't as important if your "pond" isn't going to freeze. I have a livestock water heater in it and the water doesn't freeze.

We did have a hard freeze, winter storm a couple of weeks ago
and part of the water surface did freeze, but only in the areas farthest away from the heater.

You can see my "pond" at the link I provided below of an earlier post.
earlier post

terryo Dec 23, 2006 11:15 AM

Wow! I can't believe it! I thought they had to hibernate so I never put mine outside in the winter. They hated coming in. Do they still bask even though its cold? I live in New York, and always wanted to put a "water" turtle pond in the yard, but never did. Thanks for the info.

terryo Dec 21, 2006 09:29 PM

Oh Lilypad ROFL!!
I asked for it glad I got it.
This cracks me UP you have a coffee plant you named Valdez.
hee heeeeeee I LOVE IT!
Lotsa dogs too, lotsa pets but don't we all?

I didn't mention we have a mulberry tree named Stumpy- I didn't know if anyone else ever named plants LOL!!
Stumpy was basically a dead stick when we moved here so DH cut it all down. That was in 1992, Stumpy came back & got a name because we couldn't believe this thing was growing back after being cut down to the ground. Stumpy is now the largest tree on our property and Stumpy produces mulberries for the box turtles to eat most years.. depending on the weather.

Thanks for replying to you & everyone who has

We "might" have an overabundance of animals.... But we tend to take in sick and wayward creatures - Good thing my house isn't bigger or I would be in trouble!

I think it's great that Stumpy survived! I also think it's great that I am not alone in naming my plants!!! Haha, my boyfriend thought I was nuts... But Valdez was with me back when I had no pets (hard to imagine now!) so it was kind of my little charge. I think I've had this little plant for about 7 years now - when I first got "him" he was this little droopy weed that I nursed back to health. I was told he would turn into a tree, but he is still very small - Still waiting on those coffee beans to start growing!

funny that everyone is listing spouses last

I have
one overweight female red-eared slider (named Helen)
one male eastern painted turtle (named Peter)
one hatchling three-toed box turtle (named Floyd if I find the turtle is male)
A bunch of Norfold Island pines (because even though I specialized in plant biology, I can't take care of needy plants. You can skip watering Norfold Island pines for a long time - and they do just fine)

PHRatz Dec 23, 2006 10:37 AM

>> You can skip watering Norfold Island pines for a long time - and they do just fine)

They sound kind of like our mesquites, you can abuse them & they do just fine. My sister has never lived here so she freaked out one day when she saw a man in our parent's neighborhood hacking up a mesquite "he's hurting that tree!!!" she yelled.
We all looked out & everybody said at the same time.. "ahh he's not hurting it, it's just a mesquite."
You can take whatever you want off one to dry out to use for firewood in your bar-b-que pit.. won't hurt a thing. LOL
Thanks for posting- you have a nice group of turtles yourself.
