i got her this last summer wen she was 17 inches. she is now 27 inches... i measure her every months or so maybe. she eats like a champ... juss not in front of me. bhut she is coming around and not hiding much any more and actually scratching at the glass. im feeding her largge bugs like roaches and meal worms and either live or f/t rat pups.i just introduced her to quail eggs ...she has also eaten some water snails. tell me wat you think.i call her she because wen she went bathroom on me before nothing really came out.

the picture w/ the little girl is wen i first got her... the picture of her under the light was lik a month ago almost.
ive had her for about 6 months almost.i got her wen she was lik 17 inches. she has grown alot since ive had her. she is in a 4x2x2.that should be ok for a few more months hopfully.i dont know her age exactly.im in the middle of having somone build me a wooden cage.6x4x4. she should be able to stay in there for a little while.

hwo does she look to you... i know u have a few large ones.she also has a basking spot at about 110 . well its always over 100 for sure.i have a 250 watt heat emmitter and i turn on another 100 watt wen ever im in the room ,thats wats the bright shine is in the first picture.

your lack of actual monitor knowledge, and presenting "probably over 100" as a basking temp is reflected in the sickly and undersized appearance of your monitor.

your animal looks like it is a thin 4 month old animal. one of its LEGS should be that size by now.

get your husbandry fixed, and get out of the club of neglected disposable animals.

best of luck.

those were like before pictures... she is bigger now.wat pic are u talkin about thouhg?

it is nothing personal, you just have some cliched answers and info that indicate a lack of actual monitor husbandry understanding.

you MUST know your temps. not a guess, not a "probably". temperature management is NOT having a 250 watt bulb, and then turning on another 100 watt bulb "whenever you are in the room". that is a recipe for a couple of disasters.

a skilled keeper doesn't use mega watt bulbs, especially 250s. we can pull basking spots of 170F using 45 watt Halogen Flood bulbs. there is a new Halogen FAQ and bulb wattage selection FAQ at our site, we also sell the long life Halogens at our site as well.

scratching at the glass is not waving hello, or wanting to be petted. that is typically indicative of stress and searching for a safer environment. i would look at hide spot setup and security of the cage.

as a new keeper, you should be feeding rodents and insects, PERIOD. we have a new FAQ on that as well. no snails, no eggs.

get the Savannah Monitor book by Ravi and Bennett. it has the most up to date monitor husbandry in print. get a temp gun as well, it is supremely important to getting a setup done correctly.

best of luck to you and your animals.

The appearance is that it is a very young monitor, going by the size in the pictures. By the sounds of it she/he should/could be larger by now.

Growth is controlled heavily by enviroment so you may find a need to change a few things.
