1 1/2 IN. long Hookworms in 5 mo old CB?

cbchameleons Dec 21, 2006 04:16 PM

I recently purchased a 5 month old CAPTIVE BRED female Panther. Six days after I recieved her, she had a fecal with 1 to 1 1/2 inch long Hookworms in it. 6 to 8 worms in/around the fecal. She had another fecal three days later, again with 6 to 8 worms up to 1 1/2 inches long.

I immediately notified the seller of the Panther, and was told that this is quite common in CAPTIVE BRED chameleons.
I know that feeder insects carry parasites, BUT 1 1/2 inch long hookworms in a 5 month old CAPTIVE BRED female Panther? I find very hard to believe.

Also, NONE of my other CAPTIVE BRED Panthers have hookworms, and they eat a wide variety of feeder insects.

ANY FEEDBACK ON THIS IS APPRECIATED?
Thank you

I guess it's possible then. It could be that most buyers don't get their cbb chams checked for parasites at such a young age and that it's more common than we all realize. Chams are eating and growing fast until they are about a year old, so maybe any hookworms present grow fast also. Maybe the breeder had a population of feeder insects that were really infested. It wouldn't be obvious unless he routinely checked all his stock for the adult forms of parasites. At least you did the check and can treat it.
