What am I doing wrong??

kellywood23 Dec 21, 2006 09:19 PM

Okay, here goes.

I have 5 females in a 75gal. aquarium. The substrate is paper towels and nothing else. They have an undertank heater on one end and a heat lamp on the other. They have pleny of hide boxes and a humid box with wet peat moss. They have clean water in a water bowl at all times and are fed mealworms dusted with calcium. The cage is also misted daily.

My problem, the eyes! One female has what looks to be dry eyes and refuses to open them. Another female has one dry eye, but the other is fine and the other female eyes are fine. What is going on?

I also have a male in another cage with the same setup that was diagnosed with an infection in both eyes and now is blind. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you!

Kelly

You may want to consider separating them, sounds like you might be a bit overwhelmed. Also if it is an infection (maybe?), you don't want it to spread anymore than it has.

What are your temps? Seems odd to have an UTH on one end and a heat lamp on the other. You want on "cold" side and one "hot" side, not two hot sides. We have a lamp that alternates with a UTH, but both are on the same side.

Why are you misting the cage daily? Do you mean the moist hides? Too much moisture (these are desert animals for all purposes) can be bad. Do they have any problems shedding?

All things being equal, we need more information/ photos. I would think that if the problem is that widely spread, a trip to the vet would/should be first and foremost on your list.

I apologize for being some what vage on what I was saying. The heat light and the UTH are on the same side of the tank, but the heat light is off set of the UTH. Does this make sense?

The warm side ranges from 85-90 depending on where the temperate is taken and the cool side is in the high 70's.

As for misting, yes, I mist the hide box daily. I am sorry. There have been no shed problems except for one female and she has always had that problem.

The male went to the vet, but all the vet did was give eye drops that hardly work. I think a cream would have been better.

I have never had problems like this in the past and I am trying to figure out what is going on here. Everything seems to be in check except for the eye issues. I am at a loss.

Thank you,

Kelly

if its the same problem the male had it may just be that somehow the infection spread through your animals by some means. also maybe try a different more herp knowledgeable vet possibly?

I do not think that it is the same problem as the male, but everyone that has a problem is now being treated. I would also go to a more knowledgeable vet, but the vet I am using now is the only reptile vet in the area.

Thanks,

Kelly

They were addressed in the above reply. Thank you.

Also, thanks to all for their inputs and suggestions. The geckos are being treated for their problems even though I do not know what caused it in the first place.

Thanks again,

Kelly
