cwd questions

BillieJo1225 Aug 08, 2003 03:33 PM

Hi I am new to the forum and to cwd. I got my water dragon about 2 weeks ago. And have been doing my best to research and set up the proper environment for him. He is head to end of tail about 16" long. For a temporary shelter i have him set up in a 15 gallon tank with a uva/uvb light and a heat lamp. His substrate is a coconut shell based block that you put in water and it expands. I am new to this substrate just adding today. His prior one was a type of reptile bark but i was scared of impaction when he ate his food. Does anyone use this substrate? And if so is it a good one?

We are in the process of planning a cage for him. It will be
48" long 60" tall and 2 feet deep. We are trying to figure out what type of material we want to use. We were thinking of going with wood on all three sides and just having the front open. He really likes to rub his nose on the glass of his tank. I am not sure if that is because it is too small or if this is just a continued behavior. My husband want to build the entire tank out of plexi glass. But i am scared that the nose rubbing will continue. I was going to use a screen front but i have heard that they will rub on screen too. I have looked at several of the cage setups on here and most seem to use plexi glass. Do you that use it have continued snout rubbing problems. I just want to build it right the first time around. ALso we thought about painting the 3 sides of the tank solid and just having the front glass. Sorry so long but just wanted some advice.
Thanks so much Billie

I've used reptibark/orchid bark with no problems. I'm currently using a peat moss mix as I have a living viv. I have a 6ft. tall by 5 ft. wide by 2.5ft. deep enclosure and use a plexiglass window on the front and narrow plexi windows on the sides. They were trying to jump through the glass at first but I installed a hog type wire to the inside of the glass and they love it. I've had no problems with snout rubbing or anything like that at all. Heres some pics hope they are helpful. http://photos.yahoo.com/vernooyboy@sbcglobal.net
