Last Saturday night (after midnight, in fact), my female laid her first eggs ever. There were at least 23, but I cannot be sure since she ate two and might have eaten more.
Yes, she ate eggs.
That was a surprise to me. I never read anything about that, and since then I have searched and cannot find info about it.
She did this while she was digging, moving them around, and covering them in dirt. As far as I could tell, she only ate the broken ones. So, I thought perhaps they do this in the wild - the broken ones have a strong scent from the yolk, and eating them would serve to hide the scent and nest from predators.
I'm not worried - it is not like I feed her eggs or meat, and all of the other eggs came out of her enclosure as soon as she crashed and it was safe for me to mess with her nest.
However, I am curious if other people have seen this behavior, and if there is any information that confirms my theory, or some other explanation of this.
Btw, her appatitie has picked up since, and I am supplementing with calcium.
