No dice on the calcium?

AndrewFromSoCal Dec 22, 2006 02:46 AM

Anyone know how I can get my tortoise to eat his calcium? He won't eat any greens if they're not..well, green.

You can continue putting it on the greens very lightly every day. Eventually he/she will become hungry enough to eat it and gradually will become used to it. Or you can try moistening some Mazuri pellets and lightly sprinkling them with it, then mashing the pellets with a fork or your fingers to mix the calcium in with the Mazuri. If it likes Mazuri, it should eat it without a problem. Finally, if you are in SoCal, and the tortoise is outside grazing quite a lot, it may be getting enough calcium from its selected diet without adding any supplementally. I never supplement the diets of my tortoises while they are kept outdoors for 6-8 months during the summer. The one possible exception would be a female who is producing a number of eggs. I might offer her a favorite food item dusted with calcium powder a couple of times the first week or two after she has nested.

Rosco really digs tomatos so I'll give him one every couple of weeks with calcium powder on it.
