behavior during brumation...

derekdehaas Dec 22, 2006 11:22 AM

hi all, today i was doing a check up on all of my snakes for a change of water and weight checks to make sure they are doing ok. well i checked one of my creamsicle corn she was in shed, she was hyper rattling her tail and striking inside the tub over and over and she seems angry as i was standing in front of her checking other snakes. it's worries me not because she was a calm snake and all sudden she acts like this, i am only worry about her not being unactive during cooling correct me if i am wrong. i just hope she would still be trigger for breeding that's all, aloso it's going to be my first breeding season and wish me luck! oh before you ask the room temp is 54 deg as i checked just now. thank you.

The stink kind of worries me.
Hopefully she just musked you, it sounds likely, but keep an eye on her to make sure.
Combine shedding with the fact that she has been in a state of sleep (brumating) it is probable that she was just overly defensive. Not too much to worry about.
I have several that get testy when they are in "the blue"

well, to begin with snakes shouldn't stink.
Stink usually indicates a problem.
If you went and picked her up right now, would she stink?
Or, was it just that time?
If it was just a one time deal and the snake doesn't smell now, then musking is probably the answer.
If your snake has a constant odor or any swelling or discoloration anywhere on it's body there could be problems.
check it out and let us know

ok i went ahead and checked her, seems ok but only very couldy (sheding), no smell but she sure did rattle her tail which is normal. i forgot to post the first time but just so you know that i am sure she was muskinging because her rear end opened (you know what i mean a place where they let their poop out). their weight are fine. thanks.

yep, she musked you.
Just let her brumate and provide her fresh water.
good luck
