What do mites look like??

Novice_charmer Dec 22, 2006 03:51 PM

I just noticed some bumps down the side of my red tail.He has about 6 or 7 of them down his side. They are semi rigid and appear to be just underneath the scales. He is also cloudy eyed and his skin is opaque,so he's about to shed if that matters. It will be his first she for me.I have never had mites on my snakes and this one didnt have these bumps when I got him a few weeks ago.I'm not sure that's even what it is.I'm no quite sure how to post pics here, but I do have some pics.Do they need to be hosted somewhere else before I can post links here?If I do have mites is this something I can treat myself or is a vet visit neccesary?hanx for any help i advance!

little black dots about the size of the head of a pin. I used a product called provent-a-mite with great success.

Good Luck,
Mark

Mites tend to hang out mostly around the eyes and under the chin. They are about the size of the head of a pin. I use Reptile Relief or Zoo-med's Mite off. Both work wonders. How big are the bumps.

Something like this:

Provent-a-mite works great to erradicate. These buggers came in on a new acquisition. Thankfully I always use a qaurantine room and they did not spread.

Well thanx for the tips and pics, but I don't see anything like that anywhere. These are just big bump, about 1/2" in diameter. They almost look like "bubbles" under his scales, and have the consistancy of,I guess Jello would be about the best thing I can come up with.He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but I am still very concerned none-the-less.Wher can I host pics so I can post them on here?Maybe if someone saw them some of this would make sence.Thanx!

Was the boa soaking? Could be water blisters? Happened one time (that I've seen) to an eye cap on one of my BRB's.

As a matter-of-fact he has been soaking quite a bit lately.Just about everytime I fill his bowl (3-4 times a week) I come back and it's splashed all over the cage and he's usually laying in what's left in the bowl.If this is it,will these go away when he sheds?I touched them and gave them a little poke with my finger today, didn't get any kind of reaction out of him at all,so I'm guessing they're not painful(?).I'm kind of in wait and see mode for the moment, because one of my dogs and my Burm have been to the Vet recently, and the dog is scheduled for return already, and I am TAPPED. He's been cloudy eyed for a 2 or 3 days,so he should be about readyt to shed, after he does I will have an update.Thanx for all he ideas so far!

You can host your pics for free at http://smg.photobucket.com/

After that you can copy the URL below the pics with the [ IMG ] tag on it, and paste right into your post. A picture may help a lot.

If you still have problems, send them to me at rick@sunsetbci.com , and I'll post them for you.

Good luck!

a picture of those...next time I get an animal with mites in, I will be sure to do so (not that I am asking anyone to send me a snake with mites), it would be an interesting challenge for my semi-new camera ...I was able to get decent a picture of some 2mm sized ants I found in my bathroom...perhaps too I will try a flea from the dogs next flea season...if I can get them to pose for me.

Hey Laura, yeah I figured a pic would be better than the "little black speck the size of a pinhead" ish wording I always see. Not that that isn't 100% accurate, but no beating a pic. Also wanted to document the critters just in case it was needed.
