Help i believe i have an impacted beardie any advice

jcgecko Aug 08, 2003 04:08 PM

my beardie male from dragons den i believe has become impacted even though the sand i had him on was sifted and fine grain. He hasn't been eating and i haven't seen him go to the bathroom in about 5 days. I have tried warm baths while massaging his stomach but it hasn't worked (he doesn't like baths too much yet) plz if anyone has any advice plz let me know i have a vet appointment for monday afternoon. Thanks.

you can try a couple drops of mineral oil, just put the oil in a dropper and offer it to him, he should lap it off his snout, keep up with the warm baths and massaging his belly gently until you can get him to the vet. I would get him off the sand and onto papertowels, this is why i dislike sand, the risk of impaction or even the build up of sand in the system over time lining the intestines, its not a good substrate especially for babies and juvi's, sure they live on some particulate substrate in the wild that is "alike" to playsand but they are also living a lot on hard ground, also they arent living in the wild, they live in 4x2 enclosures, dragons in the wild have a lot shorter life expectancy. it could also be that he is being fed too large of crickets perhaps? or worms? double check those temps and make sure he has a basking temp of at least 105, i would up it to 110 for him. Offer him water through a dropper also and keep him hydrated, hope this helps until you can get him to the vet. how old/big is he? Best of luck, let us know how he does.......

When you give him a bath are you letting him soak in it, I fill up a tub, with enogh water to go up to their soulders and let them soak about 10mins,,I really don't know any other advise, you might try going through this site and looking up old post..I think there is something you can give them to drink to help them out, but I can't remeber for the life of me what it is!!! I'm thinking it is mineral oil but I'm not going to swear..Good luck with him.

when you say warm... how warm i like my beardie baths to be in the 90's also i take hot water and mist them while hey soak in water up thier shoulders this gets mine going everysingle time. try the mineral oil 3-4 drops should do the trick if it's been 5 days and this doesn;t work TODAY get to the vet asap.could be nothing coulb be something but 5 days with no calcium can cause some problems either way.

Pureed carrots or squash can help as well. The high water and fiber of carrots may lossen things up. Certainly can try this along with the other suggestions.

Water temperature should be around 85F, 90F may be a bit too warm.
