Breeding Questions

Tuck224 Dec 22, 2006 08:13 PM

I have two leopard geckos - a male and female. When I first got them four months ago, they were too young to be able to sex easily. The female has had a decrease in appetite and has exhibited digging behavior. At first I was worried that she just wasn't eating as much, but then it hit me that she was probably going to lay eggs soon. I have not seen any mating behavior between the two geckos, and honestly, I don't want to encourage it. But I don't know what to be looking for if the female does lay eggs. Will it be obvious? She has dug in several locations in the cage as well as hanging out in the mossy hide a lot. Any information you guys have would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

When one of my females was about to lay eggs she dug in her vermiculite (humid hidelay box) and one morning when I checked, there was 2 eggs sitting there. It's possible that you will not see them mate, don't think that it definitely wont happen though. They are nocturnal, thus are active at night and will run into one another then one thing leads to another. With my previous group, the male mated with the female right at the introduction of her to his tank. With my current setup, I put a male in with 2 females and they both rejected him. It's been 2 months and still no eggs.

Flip her over and look for eggs. If you don't have a book with a picture, then get one. until the google images.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked to see if the female was gravid, but I haven't really been able to see anything. (The pictures make it look so easy!) When I first got the geckos, I wanted to get two females. The ever so helpful sales assistant I dealt with at the time told me that he couldn't sex them but that they wouldn't mate anyway. Really, it's my fault for not researching this more in depth before hand. I just wanted to make sure that I was prepared once I found out I had a male in case breeding did occur. I've been doing a lot of reading, but it always helps to hear what you all have encountered first hand. Thanks again!
