I'm confused on frog types

Nebraskaz71 Dec 22, 2006 08:40 PM

Hey, I currently have a lot of unique pets including an albino pacman frog. I've had him for probably 6 yrs but he never got bigger than maybe 4.5" body size. Hes healthy and what not and I've enjoyed having him.

I am lookin to add another pet to my collection and I've narrowed it to another frog or another tarantula. I'm looking to get a bigger frog this time around. What is the difference between a giant pixie and a pacman? I always thought they were basically the same thing but now I'm readin more that they are different. Whats the size difference between them? Whats other type of larger frogs that are fairly east to maintain that can be purchased in the states?

Thanks in Advance
Justin

size difference, or species difference? they are similar in size, but look very different.

you could get a bullfrog, they need UV light though, so that might be a little $$$. They get like 4-8 inches.

"Pixie" Frogs are frogs in the genus Pyxicephalus, two of which are available in the pet trade. One species, Pyxicephalus edulis is the so called "dwarf" species, which grows to about the same size as Pacman Frogs, about 4-5 inches in length. The other species is the giant. Pyxicephalus adspersus grows to nearly 10" and can be heavy, a friend of mine recently lost hers, but before then it was 2 pounds and could eat rats. So if you're looking for a big frog species, Pyxicephalus adspersus is what you want.
Your Pacman frog is known as Ceratophrys ornata, which is a different family from Pyxicephalus, though the two are convergent and I believe care is rather similar, though don't quote me on that, I don't keep any of these three species at the moment.
Appearance is a bit different too, but a quick google image search of the latin names can show that.
