NEED HELP WITH MONITOR

mustangjumpoff Dec 22, 2006 09:39 PM

I have a monitor that is about 6 years old and for some reason he is refusing to eat. I thought he might not be warm enough, since it is winter, so I added a heat emitter to up the temperature. He has become more active but still refuses to eat. I feed him prekilled mice, the same thing I have always fed him. He will play with the mouse (throw it around a little bit) but will not eat it. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Someone told me that he is trying to hibernate and if it happens it happens but the problem is his weight. I am worried because he is getting too thin.

monitors don't hibernate. it may be too cold, but that doesn't make it hibernation. without any husbandry and temp details, no one can begin to answer your question.

I have a 150-watt basking light as well as a 150-watt heat emitter that is on during the day. He is next to the window so he can get plenty of sunlight. At night the heat emitter stays on, but I change the basking light for a 150-watt red night-light. I have foam insulation on the two sides of his cage, which is 2’ x 2’ x 3’. There are rock ledges on the back wall of his cage, which he used to climb all the time and bask on but he does not do that anymore. I feed him pre-killed mice, the same thing I have fed him for years. There has never been an issue with him not eating them. Does this help? What else do you need to know? Thanks.

saying you have a 150 watt bulb means nothing. mentioning the sunlight and insulation mean nothing. pertinant information would be your ambient temperatures, basking temperatures(need a temp gun), humidity level, what species you're talking about. even a picture of your setup would provide enough info to get a response.
cheers

Thank you for replying but I am hoping everything will work out. I talked to someone last night that really helped me so I am making the necessary changes and hopefully the situation will be fixed.
