Fasting lengths for Kanakee Bullsnakes

orchidspider Dec 23, 2006 01:20 PM

I posted a pic of my my hatchling female Kanakee bull- and her mother (taken by the breeder)and the sub adult male Kanakee Bull in question. The baby is ravenous, eating a crawler every 4 days, and shedding once a month, hard to immagine she will look like her mother! Anway my male has not eaten for 3 months, how long should his self induced fast last? Im expecting that this Northern race will fast longer but just want to have an idea. I love this color form and to me, it deserves more attention by breeders and hobbyists.

Orchidspider,
I agree, I obtained a pair of Kankakees this season and they really are an underappreciated locale of bullsnakes. Both my hatchlings went off feed late in the fall, so I cooled them down for about a month, then brought them back up and they shortly became their ravenous selves again. As your female is showing, there are some pits who will eat right through their first winter, and some that wo'nt. Try cooling your male to around 55-60 degrees for 2-4 weeks, then bring him back up and try feeding him a few days later. He should resume feeding. Hope this helps, and good luck with your Kankakees!

My adult Kankakee's limit their active feeding season to a relatively short time period each year. Usually four months or so. My subadults feed for longer, maybe seven months.I have had hatchlings that will go off food late in the year. A short cool down period of a month or so will get them back and going usually. I have had other hatchlings that fed throughout the their first winter. It seems that when they are ON they're ON, and feed very heavy at this time. Even though my adults feed for a fairly short time each year, they are robust and breed well.

Kankakee's are one of my favorites and are really neat Pits. Once you become accustomed to their feeding idiosyncrasies its all good. Seems the keepers stress over it more than the snakes lol!
