Breeding your own mice.....

APLAXAR Dec 23, 2006 02:30 PM

i was curious as to who breeds their own mice. i breed my own mice for my smaller snakes because i can control the size of the meal, like my grey bands, and some of my thayeri are right in between pinks and fuzzies so i can get the exact size i need for them. my neighbor/landlord got me started on breeding the "fancy" mice too. we kind of compete as to who can breed the coolest looking one, from each litter i have a hold back to add to a colony of young ones for future breeding. well i was just curious as to who breeds mice, and if they do just albino or crazy colors too.

everyone have a nice relaxing holiday

How much a month or year does it cost you to breed mice, compaired to buying quantity of frozen? Or how Much would it cost you to breed 100 pinks.( manhours and food price)( also how many breeder mice)
Thanks R.Bichler

Adam,
I've bred my own mice for several years but for some reason this past year I had absolutly terrible luck with them. I'm not sure why but several breeding group produced not one litter of babies for me. I just bought some breeding cages and will try again soon.

I breed my own mice and rats. I have fancy mice and rats. I also have dumbo rats with the big ears. I have had trouble with my mice not producing this year and have started buying some from other people, I set up new colonies and hopefully this will solve my problem. I do find it fun seeing what colors i can produce, through selective breeding.

Everyone I know who breeds mice had trouble with them this year???? What's up with that. I've never had any trouble at all and I've bred them for years. I even bred commercially for a couple of years back in the 90's.

I don't know what is up with the mice, they usually produce well. This year they seem to eat their babies more and some just don't seem to have as many in a litter, while others just don't produce at all. Everyone here in North Mississippi that i have spoke to is having mouse troubles too.
