You may have read my post about how I am trying to attract caterpillars that feed on collard greens to my patio. I planted collards and cabbage near flowering plants that attract moths on my patio hoping to attract cabbage loopers or cabbage worms that infest collard greens and cabbage. My idea is that collard greens are super nutritious for reptiles, so any bug that feeds on them should be a good feeder. Anyway, while researching the cabbage loopers, I discovered another looper, the cotton looper, which also infests hibiscus, another nutritious plant for reptiles, so I decided to check out the hibiscus hedge I have in my backyard and discovered it is full of cotton loopers! I collected a bunch of the cocoons and placed them in a tank with a screen lid along with some hibiscus leaves and a potted flowering plant for nectar for the moths. One moth has emerged already. The females are supposed to lay up to 600 eggs. I also collected some tiny 1/4 inch long caterpillars and raised them in a jar using my organic hibiscus(No pesticides or fertilizer) leaves until they were 1-1/4 inch long. All of them pupated and made cocoons. I also offered one cat to my female panther and she gobbled it up even though she had already eaten half a dozen crix and a hornworm. The cats walk in inchworm fashion which makes them easy to spot for a cham. They are comparable in size to a superworm, but much softer. If I am sucessful in breeding them I will try and get one analyzed for nutritional value. I have no interest in making any profit off this idea, that's why I am posting here for all to read. I actually would be excited if someone else were to breed/sell them. I'll keep you all updated if anything progresses.
