Question About Keeping Box Turtles In PA

No_But_Seriously Dec 23, 2006 08:36 PM

So here’s the deal, I have 8 box turtles. I have had them for about 5 years. I purchased them on-line. They are all vigorous and happy. I have never had any serious health problems with them and they stay outside all summer. My family has just moved to PA and eventually when I finish moving all my stuff here I’d like to bring them with me. Box turtles are native to PA so does this mean I can’t bring more than 2 of them here!?? I bought them from someone in Carolina. I don’t have a bill of sell or anything like that. It seems so darn unfair that I’d have to give them away after having them in my family for so long. Any idea as to what I can do?

Try contacting Chris Urban at the PA Fish and Boat Commission. He seems to be the "horses mouth". If he says you can have your turtles, get it in writing.

Here are some people you might want to call, write to, or ask for a personal appointment to meet with face to face, particularly the senators and delegates (NOTE: this information was collected before the elections, so the delegate's and senator's information might have changed). It wouldn't hurt to mention that MD, NJ, and OH all have permit processes that allow the keeping and breeding of native species. Or that your ONE, LONE female turtle could lay - for the next five years - viable eggs that you might not find until the hatchlings emerge in the spring, there by making the pet owner a criminal. Do your legislators really want to make crimanals out of citizens just because they take good care of their pets?

Remember, legislators rate the importance of in-put in the following order: Personal meeting, mailed printed letter, fax, telephone call, e-mail. If all you can do is call or e-mail, then every little bit helps. BUT, if you can write a letter, print it out, and mail it in, or meet with your delegate or senator, all the better.
