At what point does size matter?

fliptop Dec 23, 2006 10:24 PM

While my adult kings are kicking back in brumation, I got to thinking: what if, when they awaken, I introduce my hefty male to my female who is considerably smaller?

I don't have exact measurements on them, but my male is over 5-feet and thick, and my female isn't slight, but is in the four-foot range. My male usually eats five mice at a sitting, while my female takes three, if that helps.

So, has anyone tried this size mix? Is it dangerous (barring the possible cannibalism)? Let me know, as I'm tempted to try it.

Thanks!

Like all kings you should watch them like a hawk.

Keeping a bucket of water around during the first introductions to break up any altercations is a good idea.

Andy i don't think cannibalism is an issue when both snakes are in breeding mode (if all pre breeding conditions were met) ... with my limited experience it seems that some keepers pull snakes apart once the notice a bit of resistance from the female ... while this may be a sign that she's not ready/interested i think it's just normal behavior (snake "4play" if u will?) so far all my females have put up a fight only to give in eventually. The very 1st time I bred snakes the female looked like she was in a battle when it was over teeth marks were all over her but it was a successfully breeding.

"MangoHead" looks Sweeeeeeeeet! and that hypo cross is killer!

BTW: I'm not sure if our (yours and mine) will be adequately brumated this year, with the fluctuating weather we've had there's no telling the outcome of next season's pairings

2. its a yes for the lavender next season (we need to talk I'll email you tomorrow)

Cool about the lav! I was thinking the same thing about the temps, but I have a feeling I'll be tempted to give it a shot anyway--at the worst it just doesn't work, but if it does--babies!

Talk to you soon, and here's to a good season (holidays AND snakes!),

I used my 6' male on several females that were 3'.

It may look as if he's too big but it should turn out fine.
Last year, I got some fine little easterns....

Here's a two year old male with my large bottomless pit female. I watched them close with no problems, he just took a bite and hung on while she crawled around the tub. She produced 14 fertile eggs.
