What is the best way to "spot clean"

newstorm Dec 24, 2006 03:02 PM

My BT leaves huge piles of crap all over the place, this i guess goes without saying. Other than removing the soiled substrate, what can i use to clean the bottom of the enclosure to disinfect it without posing any chemical threat to the animal? The bottom is plywood.

You should cover the bottom of the cage with something that is,nt absorbent like pondliner or linoleum. There's a disinfectant called novasan or quatracide that is supposedly not harmful to animals. They say you just spray on and wipe dry even water dishes. I'm not sure if I would trust this. maybe someone else online has used it and can vouch for it but I'd say your best bet is to line the bottom of your cage properly.

I have been using virosan for years now, never had any problems with it. (That is the same stuff as novasan) I agree a wood bottom cage is going to be nothing but problems and it will eventually rot all the way out.

a deeper soil substrate makes this pretty much a moot issue. you just spot clean and move on.

having a wood bottom presents problems. it might as well be a sponge soaking up bacteria, fecal matter, urine, and water/moisture.

we use Virosan extensively, but not for anything like that. i don't know of any product that would clean and sanitize a wood floor in that situation. you need some kind of impermeable barrier.
