A quick question on heat mats...

make_urself Aug 08, 2003 05:15 PM

OK i bought a humidifier for my burms tank...bc i got really tired of spraying. The thing is that i have a 75 watt bulb heating his cage...so this kinda defeats the purpose by drying out all the humidity. Now i was wondering i have some heat matts and they work wonders with humidity but they dont seem to heat the cage's air. Now i know the point of these things is too heat the actual ground for temp regulation...so if the cage air isnt necessarily up to par..can the ground still be. I have two heat pads under a 30 gallon and the humidity is great yet the thermostat doesnt raise about 84-86...is that alrite? or might the ground be too hot..

Meaure the temperature at ground level to be sure it isn't too hot. Heat mats aren't designed to heat all cages- some wooden cages for instance the heat can't penetrate appropriately or some high cages, glass cages etc. Flex Watt does a good job of heating the air in my Neodeshas but I'm in Florida so the humidity and ambient temperatures are working for me. You can place a large hide over the area of the heat mat and it can keep that enclosed area warm if the ambient temperature is not too low. You can also purchase radiant heat panels - Pro Products has them- which do not dry the cage but heat from overhead like a bulb. Kane heat mats can be placed inside the cage and with a hide over, they will do well for even cold times, but they have to be on a thermostat.
