Help Feeding new Hatchling

CMihm Dec 25, 2006 10:28 AM

I just got an Alligator hatchling on the 23rd and Ive started getting worried because he has not eaten yet. When do new gators tyypically start feeding and Also does anybody have any tips to start getting him to eat??

Thanks Cody Mihm

Give him awhile to get settled in, and start him on live foods. The movement will obviously catch his attention. 2 days isn't long enough to start worrying. Good luck with your new animal.

OK thanks for the info I think he may have taken a cricket this morning. One other question though about how long does it take for them to not be scared of me anymore?
Thanks-Cody Mihm

Make sure the enclosure's environmental conditions are correct. (See: http://crocodilian.com/crocfaq/ for specifics)

Hatchlings are often shy and apprehensive to feed. It's been my experience that the best way to start them off is to place their enclosure in a quiet part of the house and offer them food overnight. I place appropriate sized fish on the land section near the water's edge.

Have you tried crickets?

I've had niles, dwarfs, spectacled, and broad snouts all go crazy as hatchlings when i threw crickets into their pens. Gut load or dust 1st.
