Star Tortoise Diet ?'s

scope1145 Dec 25, 2006 12:33 PM

Hello Everyone,

Could anyone give me a breakdown of their star tortoise diet? Ive read a lot of care sheets online but I would like to hear what some of you guys have to say. Ive read that I should try to stay away from supermarket greens. Do you guys use any supermarket greens? Also..about the timothy hay..is it just the dried out hay that can be bought in the little bags..I have access to bales of this stuff, its more green than the stuff I see in stores though(still pretty dry, just green). In the spring and summer I would have unlimited bermuda grass, dandelions, weeds(not sure what kind yet). Im just trying to find out what I have to give the tortoise to make sure he has a good diet all year round..with as many things as possible. The stars im getting in the near future are the Burmese stars. Im not new to tortoises...but these are going to be my first stars. Im confident that I have everything else covered..just need a little help with the diets. Thanks

Hi,
With the grass and weeds you have it pretty much covered for a Star diet.

I would add hibiscus leaves and flowers, clover, mulberry leaves, grape leaves and cactus pads. In winter if you are short on these then you can use greens like endive, escarole, romaine, redleaf and green leaf and once in a while mix in turnip greens, collard, mustard, parsley and water cress.

As for hay, as long as it is not too rough you can go ahead and use the bales of timothy hay.

Good luck.
Michael
