Fighting Rats

diggy415 Dec 25, 2006 12:56 PM

Ok here's the deal as i thought it was under control. I have tanks of mature males, if i bring the male to the female or vise versa, i end up with the male beating the crud out of the female and gashes are given to her and i don't think i should keep those wounded ones anymore. Why do the males insist on beating up the females everytime and to such extreme? They are friends after a bit and i believe it's cause he wants action and she doesn't and he thumps on her but im tired of getting bloood baths. Is there an easier way of introducing them without this extreme measure? all clean cages before anyone is introduced, and i don't do a 1.3 do to this reason.

Personally if any of my rats bloody other rats more than once they are fed off. Males don't have to be brutes (or females either) to get the job done and I breed away from it.

Don't produce - fed off
Kill babies - fed off
Sick - fed off
Jumpy - fed off
Bite me - whacked on cement then fed off

If you're like most of us, these are being raised for feeders with a possible side line of pets. A biting rat is no good for either. Be careful about saving the "new blood", as the babies may be nasty as well. By all means, raise up a litter or two and see how they are but if the babies take after the father, then they would all be snake-snacks to me.

Yeah, when it comes to the last rule, doesn't matter if it's feeding day or not! Even if I just fed everyone, I can always find a snake who will "take one for the team" and pound down the offending rodent. If anything it's more of a "who gets lucky" this week question!

My worse problem with the last rule is remembering where I am. I work in a pet store and have to be careful about customers when refering to the reflex to 'prekill' rodents that bite, or attempt to bite me when I am at work. That and my dh says I need a shirt that says 'Professional Killer' but that too doesn't go over real well in a pet shop.

Sonya
I get the same thing from my wife. Until there's a mouse or rat in the house. Then it's "Get the trap! Get the trap!"

The only rule I would add to is...

If it even looks sick, cull it. Don't let diseases spread because you are trying to be compassionate. You are responsible for a colony, not just a rodent.
