Cage setup

Herpitologer Dec 25, 2006 10:53 PM

I have a 5 12 foot long custom cage 312 feet tall and 2 ft in width. All wood. I was wondering will that work for a Savannah and would i have to paste the wood with something like drylock and what wattage of heat bulb should i use since its so tall?

if you are using any kid of decent substrate, it is moist, and if wood is your base, there is little you can do to prevent it from rotting away over time. maybe it will last a year, maybe two, but not long term. i would not advise treating it or adding any chemicals to it, that is not going to work in the long term. a liner must be used.

as for wattage, that is the wrong question to ask, as there is no possible answer to that question, it is incredibly vague. to rephrase the question, and get an answer, check out this FAQ:

Is the wood already sealed or has any sort of grain-filler been applied? I ask because that can affect what sort of sealer you can apply over it.

Latex based drylok is something to consider. I know of a guy who build a 1100 gallon aquarium in his basement. It is plywood, concrete backer-board and drylok. It has held water for almost a year, IIRC. Not that you'll find me doing that in my basement, but I digress.

He also build a 90 gallon tank from melamine and painted drylock directly to that - no backer board. It has held water for months.

What really surprised me is another guy who painted drylok directly to plywood to make an aquarium. It has held 85 gallons of water for several months.
