Garter Not Eating Please Help (

levickc Dec 26, 2006 03:44 AM

Hi,

I have had a Garter Snake now for just over a year, never had a problem, until now.
She hasn't eaten now for 9 weeks, and isnt pooping. I have been told that i do not have to make her hibernate unless i want to and that most people do this for breeding purposes. I'd rather not have to do this as i really wouldnt know what to do and im really concerned shes going to die. She's very active and always comes out without a hassle.
I have been feeding her pinky mice until a few months ago when i moved up to fuzzies, which she can eat without a problem.
Her temperatures are fine.
Should i change foods? if so, what would be best?
does she need to hibernate?

Please can anyone help.

From what I've read and from what people on here have told me, Garter snakes don't NEED to hibernate, but she just may instinctively be going into hibernation. Snakes don't go into a true state of hibernation. It's called brumation and they remain active. I wasn't going to hibernate my snake either, but she decided herself that she needed it (by not eating) so I obliged her.

There are a couple of questions, from me of course, down farther under your question.....so read on.

Anyone one else, feel free to correct me if I got any of the info incorrect.

Good Luck!
