This is probably the most exceptional box I have ever seen in the wild. My wife came across this while jogging in the Outer Banks of NC this past summer. And yes I did put it back where it was found after snapping the pics (it is illegal to take them from this area).

Again, just beautiful.

I was just East of Elizabeth City shortly after you posted that pick. Driving the highways for the better part of a rainy day (work related), I was able to assist about a dozen box turtles to the other side of the road. I had your picture in mind, thinking that the turtles would all be of above average color. Well, they were pretty as always but all rather typical. It just goes to show that you've found a rare jewel in that picture. People may think that this is locality related, but it's really not. This turtle is a needle in a haystack...very nice find!
