Are habba huts safe to use???

scope1145 Dec 28, 2006 08:18 PM

Hello,

I have used these in the past without a problem. Since then Ive been told by more than one person that I shouldn't use these with my turtles and torts. I have some made of cedar and some made out of something else. I cant remember the exact reason they told me but I think it was something to do with respiratory problems. Has anyone ever heard this?? I would like to keep a somewhat natural look instead of the plastic hide boxes. I know I can find something to use at my ranch but its too cold to mess with until spring. I wonder if oak would be any better...I could just drop an oak tree and make a ton of them. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That has been my question too! Since the wood used is unidentified, I avoided their use. Cedar does emit fumes that repel moths so I see no reason to subject my animals to that.
ZooMed sells "Habba Huts" (natural. but unknown, wood product) and "Turtle Huts" (natural looking resin product). "Turtle Huts" may be used dry or in aquatic setups, made so they don't float. Prices are identical.
I use a large "Turtle Hut" in my Russians's habitat and they love climbing it.
