An idea for heating...

coluberking25 Dec 28, 2006 09:15 PM

How about just getting the heat pad back down in the low 80s via rheostat, and then see what happens? When you think about it, the snake will do what it needs to do to survive, warming up and cooling off as it wishes. That's pretty much what I've done with my other snakes with no problems. I've had the king and python for about 3 or 4 years now. Just an idea. What are your guys thoughts on that?

I had used rheostats (dimmer switches) on my animals for years. They work fine. The only problem is that you have to check the teperature constantly. As the seasons (or the tempertaure of the room changes) your dimmer switch will have to be adjusted. It works. Just don't forget to monitor the temps.

Shouldn't be a problem monitoring temps. I'm beginning to keep records of all my herps.

So you don't oppose my idea?

Scott,
....I would not oppose your idea. In fact if you look at my "keeping it simple" thread from december 8th you will see that rheostat dimmers are just what I was recommending when using heaters like yours.
....You asked in another post if perhaps some of us were annoyed with your questions. I think that rather than being annoyed some of us are just perplexed that you seem to ask questions and then ignore what we are telling you. I do realize that many of us on this forum are science geeks. We just expect that all the people seriously keeping snakes and reading these forums should also be science geeks. Obviously not everyone knows what a rheostat is. If I had asked a question and someone had mentioned using a rheostat in their reply and I did not know what a rheostat was I would have done a google search using the two words rheostat and definition to find out. I would also do a google search using the words reptile and heating and proportional thermostat. I would also have done a google search using the word flexwatt since several people have mentioned it in recent threads on this forum.
...I like the rheostat that Dave shows in his post. I rig them up similar except that I use a plastic outlet box rather than the metal one. The dimmers that Chris Harrison posted links to are nice but are expensive compared to the do it yourself projects we science geeks build.
Jeff

After all, why would I ignore advice from someone who has kept his CRB alive since 1989? I think I just might be freaking out, and trying to make things perfect. I've just been so used to hearing that rainbows require specific requirements that I think I might be trying TOO hard to pamper this guy. Yesterday I decided to make a phrase to live by(sorry if I stole it from anybody). That phrase is this:

As long as the snake eats, it's usually doing fine.

BTW, I bought a Zoomed rheostat(hold up to 150 watts). Turned off the heating pad for right now. Once it's dropped enough, it's rheostat time. I'll let you know how everything works out. Oh yeah, I feed him a nice sized rat this Sunday.

PS-Jeff I printed out your keeping it simple post awhile ago

I guess our point is (speaking for Jeff and myself, please correct me if wrong), You've been asking what to do about temps for a week now and we all believe your temps to be too high and this is the first post where you have indicated you are actually implementing any of our suggestions.

Yes rainbows have some specific requirements, but they like most snakes are pretty hardy and can survive many adverse conditions providing they are not long term issues.

Remember to Relax, Breath and enjoy your CRB.

IMO in order of importance:

Temps
Fresh Water
Food
Humidity
Clean enclosure
Appropriate sized enclosure with appropriate hides

I consider all to be basic requirements and make certain all are taken care of. Just thinking for your new baby, which needs to cover first in the event you cannot cover all at once.

...and that's that babies aren't 3.5 feet long lol. But I will admit I have sometimes been stupidly ignoring the ideas. I wasn't just consulting you guys, I did try consulting other ophidiphiles that I knew...sorry about all that.

I'd have to agree with you. Guess I'm trying to conceal my soft side lol. Actually I'm thinking of respecting the previous owner and keeping the CRB's name Precious. Can't really think of anything else to call it lol.
