New Guinea Crocodile numbers in the USA

crocodile_king Dec 28, 2006 09:17 PM

I am trying to figure out the numbers for this species with in the USA to date, any help would be appreciated.

This is what I have come up with so far:

In 1985 0.0.10 NG's were imported into the USA by ?
In 2000 9.7.2 NG's were imported into the USA by me
In 2001 0.0.12 NG's were imported into the USA by ?
In 2005 1.1.8 NG's were imported into the USA by SAAF
In 2005 2.2.10 NG's were imported into the USA by me

Thats a total of 52 or 12.10.30 New Guinea Crocodiles on the books to ever be in the USA to date.

I know from my 2000 import MANY are no longer living but I can only so far confirm that 2.1.1 have died

I know from my 2005 import again MANY are no longer living and can confirm that 0.2.7 have died

With this information, the numbers would now show a total of 39 or 10.7.22 New Guinea crocodiles within the USA, however I am positive that there are less living animals of this species that I have been unable to confirm so far, like I aid any help would be appreciated.

Also, I know of 1 odd or Northern form New Guinea crocodile, this animal should not be included in my data as this animal is actually a differant species, I'm not sure if I am counting this animal in the 1985 import or not and I see no way to know 100% if I am or not.

Drop the numbers down 1, after checking over records a second time I found that 0.0.1 New Guinea Crocodile was Exported from the USA in the 80's

So that makes the total 38 or 10.7.21

I think there are MANY LESS than 38 still alive in the USA though and I would really like to get this all figured out and prehaps put a stud book together for the species.

Did you know this species although not appendix 1 and not endangered was so rare in captivity??

I think half a sleep! Here is the correct information .....

Thats a total of 64 or 12.10.42 New Guinea Crocodiles on the books to ever be in the USA to date.

I know from my 2000 import MANY are no longer living but I can only so far confirm that 2.1.1 have died

I know from my 2005 import again MANY are no longer living and can confirm that 0.2.7 have died

1 animal exported in the 80's

With this information, the numbers would now show a total of 50 or 10.7.33 New Guinea crocodiles within the USA, however I am positive that there are less living animals of this species that I have been unable to confirm so far, like I aid any help would be appreciated.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm has 4.2.0 NG Crocs.

Several Zoos in the US have animals listed as "Crocodylus novaeguineae mindorensis" which I assume are Philippine crocodiles. In case you're interested, there are 3.6.15 Crocodylus novaeguineae mindorensis in US zoos.

Did you get your importation numbers from the USFWS via the FOIA?

Hi John, thanks for the info!

The ISIS New Guinea listing for SAAF I believe is out dated, SAAF at one point was keeping 1 of the odd northern New Guinea crocodiles and 1 possibly 2 of the normal or southern New Guinea crocodiles (I believe one of the normals had died if they did if fact have 2 of them). These crocodiles mentioned were on loan to SAAF and have now been transfered back to there owner, SAAF now has 1.1.8 New Guinea's that they received from Australia.

The ISIS is a good source for information but a lot of times it is out dated and only a handfull of facilities report holding to the ISIS system.

With regards to the Philippine Crocodile, I havent done much research on numbers of this species but I think there are more like 150-200 of these in the USA, with the majority of which were bred at Gladys Porter Zoo in TX, there mindorensis and all offspring are part of a Philippine government program and are actually the property of the Philippine government.

I received my information through the CITES register, a full detailed listing is available from 1975 to present day and it is VERY accurate.

I just thought about it and I will have to double check if 1 NG did die at SAAF because if 1 did in fact then that would drop 1 off of my listing (most likely a 85' import)

are any being bred in usa at this point.not set up for large crocs but hope to be next may. just wondering

crocodile_king Dec 29, 2006 10:48 PM

no New Guinea's have been bred in the USA to date, there are 4 facilities with in the USA that have adults of both sexes but so far no breeding.

This species is VERY calm and NON aggressive towards humans, but VERY VERY unsocial and AGGRESSIVE towards other crocodiles. These guys seem to like to kill each other.

One Example of many: 2.2 adults that were housed together, 1 female killed the other 3 which were of similar size, now she has a new mate which is a bit larger than her, she is fine towards him but he likes to beat the crap out of her, there seperated but he tries to get at her every chance he gets and not to breed but to beat her up ... crazy!

John Mellyn: I would like to know number and sexes of NG's your holding at the Snake Farm and any death details would be appreciated(numbers and sex)

Terry Phillip: I believe your just holding the 1 NG at Reptile Gardens, I would like to know the sex of this animal and I think I heard 1 NG died a while back, can I get a confirmation on that?

SAAF (David / John): Did 1 NG die at SAAF a while back, if so can you please let me know the sex of the animal.

Jarrod from TX?: How many male NG are you holding

Mike Talka: Can you help provide any helpful info??

I need info from one other source but I know he doesnt use the board so I will talk to him in Miami in Feb.

Once I find out the above information, I believe I will have VERY VERY accurate numbers and sex ratios, probably 95% complete.

snake farm as of last year was holding 2 males i was going to purchase one they were trying to kill each other in july i was there and they were getting along john was not there so i only talked to his employee who knew very little about there status in being for sale.

crocodile_king Dec 31, 2006 07:13 PM

Thanks for the info, ill have to get a hold of him and get the details, he originally had a large group (mostly males though) but as I recall he lost a couple, sent 1.1 to Reptile Gardens and I think sold a couple which were probably all males.

This species is VERY AGGRESSIVE towards each other. I think if keeping more than one NG together the enclosure needs to be small and some what crowded to try and avoid territorial fighting or VERY large to allow them to set up individual territories.

Even small NG's are very aggressive towards each other and will fight and kill each other quit often, The hatchling NG's I have now are all being housed individually which takes up a lot of space but a good precaution just to be safe!

are you importing any in the future

crocodile_king Dec 31, 2006 08:21 PM

Got a small amount of 06' hatchlings but keeping most at least until there big enough to be accurately sexed (I hope for some females as this species is rare in general but the females are really rare).

I was only able to get a small amount of hatchlings and I promised some to friends, but I may have a couple that I may be willing to part with, im not sure yet.
