Stubborn Shedder

Dragonflychaser Dec 28, 2006 09:50 PM

My corn, Apollo, has been building up a shed for some time now. I was finally happy when his eyes milked over because he'd been taking his sweet time getting duller and duller.

Well, his eyes cleared on Tuesday and he still hasn't shed. I tried soaking him in wet paper towels as well as misting him, and still nothing. He seems to be alright, overall, as far as I can tell. His colors have actually brightened again and he's been moving about a bit so he isn't inactive. Just defecated today, too.

On top of that, it's been almost 2 weeks since his last meal. Last Friday's meal got cancelled because of the oncoming shed.

The room temperature of the cage is 70 /- degrees and there's an UTH on one end. He's shed twice since I've had him, and only needed a misting once to help. There are enough things for him to rub on in his cage.

What do you guys suggest I should do? And is it too risky to feed him at this point?

Once they're blue and then clear up again, it can take awhile before the actual shed. Every now and then one of mine will take a little longer then normal. I wouldn't worry, it can take a week or so.

Oh, okay! I had read somewhere that once they clear from being blue, they're supposed to shed usually within 24-48 hours. I won't stress about him now, thanks.

How about feeding, though? I'm sure he's hungry.

Most of my snakes eat no problem while in shed. Only one or two will refuse to eat. I would offer a smaller food item, he may take it. If it's your only snake and don't want to possibly waste a mouse then you could wait. He should shed any day and it won't harm him.
