Snake can change color!?!

coluberking25 Dec 29, 2006 09:45 AM

Well it was about 12:15 AM when I decided to go to bed so I thought I'd take one more peek at the reptiles before I hit the hay. Well first thing I checked was the CRB and I witnessed a sight I thought was remarkable. The snake had changed color! The best way I can describe it was that the white from the belly was "creeping" up its sides and stopped about halfway up. I thought this was pretty cool, but is it a good sign or a bad one? Thanks in advance.

This is very common in rainbows. I've read several places where it's been linked to thermoregulation. Darker colors during the day to absorb more heat, lighter colors at night. I don't know if I buy this being related to thermoregulation though. I don't think these snakes bask in the sunlight so I don't see how this would help them. In fact, they're active at night. Maybe this color shift has something to do with their nightitme activity level.

This is Savannah, she was my rescue, I bought her as an adult with dry skin and crusty eyes. I could see the color behind all that and look at her now.

Here is Savannah again, Both pics taken on same day, The one above at around 10:30 AM, this one about 12 hours later, she has her nightie on. Look at the difference in her sides.

That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. The white is much more prominent in your snake though. The white kinda has a spider-web like pattern on mine, plus mine gets two white stripes on the head.

PS-BEAUTIFUL snake by the way. Those BRBs never cease to amze me. My CRB is quite pretty, but I only have a crappy camera right now. I promise to get much better pics on here ASAP.
