combs reptiles Dec 29, 2006 12:23 PM

I got a post card in the mail today from FWC and it looks like they want to make new rules and requirments and permits and a whole mess of garbage.
I can honestly say i hate the arrogant, pompus morons who think they need to tell me how to keep my reptiles and or boas.
I for sure will be letting my legislators know im totally opposed to them putting thier nose in my business. Its not just class I, II its also class III reptiles they want to mess with.

heres a link to their garbage.
I understand something has to be done about retards letting loose thier burms and retics etc in the wild, but putting more restrictions on honest law abiding folks is not the answer.
I agree pet shops should not sell burms, retics to anyone under 18 and the should be registered with a chip, so if it is loosed in the wild it can be traced back to owner. Other then that, we have laws already , just enforce them.

That after reviewing the whole proposal, its not all bad, but it is a start in the direction of someday it will effect us who own and keep boas, and a few ball pythons and various reptiles.
Here is a clip from the document , which details thier "reptiles of concearn"
****(2) Any person who keeps, possesses, exhibits or sells reptiles of concern shall comply with Sections 372.921, 372.922, F.S., and the provisions of this rule. The following reptiles, including any subspecies or hybrids thereof, are designated as reptiles of concern: (a) Indian or Burmese python (Python molurus) (b) Reticulated python (Python reticulatus) (c) African rock python (Python sebae) (d) Amethystine or Scrub python (Morelia amethystinus) (e) Green anacondas (Eunectes murinus) (f) Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) ****

then it goes onto to tell how to qualify to posses these animals.
It amazes me how arrogant folsk like jack hannah can say this and that should not be owned by the "general" public, but what would he do with out these awsome animals? What gives him the right to say who should own what. Common sense is the rule of the day.. i agree a full grown tiger in a NY apt is a no no, but if someone wants to keep a huge snake, and they can do it responsibly, then more power to them.

Just getting it off my chest... i cant stand the goverment trying to tell me how to run my life.

Seems to me that the problem is people are being accused of dumping animals they no longer want. If that is the problem, wouldn't it just be easier to have a program where you can turn in any unwanted animal....even a snake or a lizard or whatever, with no criminal penalties or judgements of any kind. Then the animals could be appropriately placed, rather than becoming "news fodder."

They did that.. and they got a total of like 6 animals, none a snake. A couple birds, lizards and a turtle. It was a joke.
I do think people who own these huge snakes should be able to maintain them.
I like the idea of any of these "big" snakes that are sold, has to a have a chip, so if it is found in the wild, someone can be held accountable.
We shall see..

I like that chip thought.I am wondering tho,how easy would those chips be for the owner to cut them out before they release them?

Won't the "chip owner", already a known person of integrity who has dumped his animal, haha, simply say the snake escaped or was stolen?

In part of the proposal, it talks about record keepinmg. I beleive that it is the "animals of concearn" owners duty to notify FWC of any deaths births etc. Im sure a lost or stolen pet would be required to be reported as well, and if not then owner would be fined for not doing so.
After listening to some other points, i do agree something had to be done in order to help all of us good owners who do it the right way, not get such bad press.
Just keep your hands off my boas! LOL

Well this is what happens when a few people ruin something for the whole. I do not see this a the government trying to tell anyone what to do but to set reasonable standards for all of us to follow. This will now hold all to the same standard not a varing system based on an Officers knowledge or ignorance of the proper care of certain reptiles. I am a Police Officer here in Florida and I feel personally that the standards are reasonable and most of us can continue to keep our collections as is with little or no change. While I have a decent collection, boas, pythons including 2 burms, and a few corns for the kids, I see the need for the none snake friendly people to be educated also. I have saved many corn, rat, and a few other snakes that people called the Police Department saying that the snake was a "rattlesnake" or even once I was told there was a cobra on a back porch, the cobra was a rat snake. I recently just rescued a 8-9 foot burm that was called in at a womens house trying to "break in". This has now left a bad name for the hobby in this neighborhoods mind. I tried to speak to the people and they told me that all snakes should be banned. Well I think being regulated is better then a total ban. I've worked for years building my collection on a cops salary and I would hate to lose it. At least now there will be a fair set of rules we will have to follow, but a standard set of rules which i agree with there being a standard in writing so even us as Officers have to follow. This is just the way I feel. Sorry if any typo's just worked a double and got to be back in at 0700. Thanks for your time.

To me its the same as before.....nothing is changing really except that the reptiles of concern need put tags or photos taken for IDS. How hard is a good id photo to have?
I for one have photos of all my snakes as it is.....The new regs were developed with help from several well known breeders/dealers as an alternative to an outright ban.
I think this is one example on how herpers succesfully worked with the governmnt concerning regulations.

FWC is PRO-Keeping animals........as long as in right conditions(husbandry, etc), safe manners, and they even ASKED herpers first what WE think should be done so that everyone is happy.

The only animal I disagree on is the tegu...but they could generate lots of problems with nesting birds out in the glades. Plus they are tropical carnivores.

Any opinions or thoughts?
