green female Squamiger *pics*

Kestrel Dec 29, 2006 04:30 PM

Figured i'd take some new photos of my squam girlie while I was spot cleaning her cage.. I've raised this girl since she was a little tyke. Just out of curiousity, anyone know how large a female has to be to breed? This girl has always been a "pet", but i've toyed with loaning her to a friend on breeding loan. She's not very big at all, probably 18" now and feeding on large weaned mice.

Brienne,

Very nice squam, she'll produce some great looking offspring. Do you have a weight on her? She sounds a little small, but it might be worth trying to breed her. My female is about 26-27" and normally about 170 grams. I've attached a pic for size reference, but she is gravid in the pic so her size is a little larger than usual. She had her pre-lay shed on Wednesday, so only a few days until she drops. Hope this helps.

P.S. THANK YOU for the recommendation on the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I got it as a Christmas gift and love it. I'll have to post a few new shots with it.

Regards,
Evan

Hmm Maybe she is bigger then 18".. She looks almost exactly the same size as yours pictured, maybe a TAD smaller but not by much.

You're very welcome. now get to using it!

Damn, Brienne. You take great pictures. I gotta get me one of those Rebel's.

Here are a few shots I just took. I'm using the EF-S 18-55mm lens. I plan to get a better macro lens asap, the "stock" lens isn't all that great.

The squam is the father of the offspring due any day now.

Very cool. Dont know what your talking about with the lens. The stock lens is about all i use. lol. I bought some similar lenses over the past few years by other companies and the canon has always been the best

I didn't know you used the 18-55mm lens. I thought you mentioned a Tamron macro before, but I must have been mistaken.

I once posted a photo of my Gaboon that was taken with my boyfriends Tamron Macro... For the most part I use the stock Canon lens for standard photography. I also use a Sigma 300mm telemacro for wildlife and other things, but rarely with herps.

Hey Brienne

What is her age? That is probably more important than her size. A word of warning, when I first got into Atheris I rushed a female along and bred her at 18 months of age. She dropped a small litter for me and then promptly died on me. I had overfed her and she was very fat which I know caused her death. Your female doesn't look overfed, so if she is 2-3 years of age I'd say give it a shot. She will probably either have a small first litter for you or do nothing her first year and that is totally normal. Best of luck.

Yeah, she is about 3 now. I was always warned about over feeding so she's been on a 10-14 day feeding schedual most her life. Maybe ill loan her this year for breeding, see what happens.
