i was looking through my paperwork and i spent more than $1,000 on snakes. not food, not cages or supplies. Snakes alone. please someone out there say they spent more than me and make me feel better. please? even if you are just kidding.....

So, what's the problem?

Realistically, that's not fair.
I spent at very least 25,000 in computers in the last 10 years.
I just built 2 racks to hold my new snakes, (All my friends think I'm crazy.), I prolly spent more than $5000 in smokes in my lifetime. Talk about a waste of money. That's almost as bad as having a boat!!!!!
Not to mention my gun collection. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$1000= chicken feed, if it keeps you happy.
Because if you KNOW what makes you happy, and don't do it, and as a result, are unhappy, it's YOUR FAULT. You are responsible for your own happiness.
I won't even bring up my sulcata at this time.
You think your snakes eat you out of house and home????????

As you go down the list of all the exorbidant, extravagant, excessive things in your life, you will soon find that you would do most, if not all of them again, if offered the chance.
While having money is nice, I don't consider it a priority.

no, having a boat is not a waste of money UNTIL you do what my father did. he is 63 years old. lives in richmond, va(actually midlothian,va). no where close to water without driving distance. and he bought a 30 something foot SAIL BOAT. he doesnt know how to sail. now, i may be the only one, but i think thats a lil off the wagon if you ask me

i have spent atleast a grand in guns alone this year (in the last 3 months ) and at leats 650 in snakes and that doesnt include all the free snakes and trades that happened. i have also lost about 300 in snakes for various reasons so you tell me whats wrong ha ha.
i would rather spend a grand on snakes rather that a grand on bills.

Most of my newer snakes and geckos are rescues, but I just dropped $450 at VMS for some nice 2006 corns... got a few baird's ratsnakes and leos too. I think I've spent about $2000 on vet trips, food, housing and miscellaneous supplies since August.

My hobbies are expensive... herps, tattoos and sushi...

Lets see, a pair of phantoms, adult hypo miami female, pair of Cochran's Abbott's, 1 adult male meahllmorum(still looking for female), pair of NC locality kings, adult female western hog, 2 Ghana female balls, a large female ball(3500 grams!) adult male het for albino ball, and a pair of het for snow boas, . As a bonus I picked up a really nice 4 ft jungle carpet python last week that some poor lady found on her couch when she came home (free of charge)and wasn't too sure how it got into her house as well as a pair of Loudon County VA black rats from Northern VA reptile rescue. You can feel a little better I may be right there with you!! I also bought and sold a few balls, Cali kings, an albino Burmese and two Kenyan sand boas for a little profit that was all spent on frozen rodents and a new pair of snake tongs.

let me know how those sand boas are for you. i've been wanting one. mainly b/c my name is Kinion and its almost the same. but they are extremely cute with their lil beady eyes. i hear all they do is hide in the sand. but let me know your 2 cents and it might make me buy 1.

they where the ones I sold. They do hide a lot and also keep very well in deep aspen. They have a strong feeding response much like wetern hogs. I found them easy and fun I just had to narrow down my range of species to mostly corns/kings/rats.

just ordered today a pair of bloodreds het hypo. Does that count towards this year or next?

I dunno. i already did all my paperwork and i have 2 snakes on order-but i'm not paying til friday. so i can make sure to get the 2006 paperwork done we might have to do some switching in 09 or whenever my bloods are old enough to have babies. mine will either be het amel or amel bloodreds. i'm excited!!! and congrats on your new purchase!

Kin, if it will make you feel better, maybe you can charge an admission fee to come check out your zoo? I'm sorry, I mean a "Parking Fee". You may have a better collection then the Norfolk Zee.

i probably could charge a FEE since i have 13 cats, 3 dogs, 2 birds, 4 chickens, everything you see below... and i think a few fish. but you cant really pet those my neighbors always pick on me for having a "zoo" but it keeps their kids happy. and they love how i'm the animal girl. if something happens with one of their animals i'm the one they come to. its nice to feel loved

Sounds like my house..
At this time...we have 4 dogs, 9 cats, 3 bearded dragons, 3 tree frogs (a friend caught these in his pool and brought them to me, they are pretty cool little animals) 6 aquatic turtles, 1 Red-foot tortoise and 58 snakes.

Hey Jimmy, I just got to 60 snakes! I used to have a crazy amount of animals from a tegu, monitor to scorpions, tarantulas, african grey parrots and furry ferrets, but trimmed down to 3 bearded dragons, and my snakes. But, I actually have more reptiles than the two petstores in town combined!

Are you crazy? ...what a waste of money!!!...LOL just kidding

It can cost a little to get your collection where you want it.
Now, it's time to slow down on the purchases (unless I have something you want....LOL) and start working on making a little change to help cover the expenses.
This is a bad place to go for condolences on snake expendatures. Most of the people here have probably spent more money on snakes then they ever planned.
We just can't ever let our spouces know exactly how much we really have spent.

This is something I know i will never make a living at.
It's a hobby, passion, joy.
But, I did make a profit this year. Not much but brought in more then I spent. And that includes everything from substrate, to snakes to light bulbs.
That is my goal. Enjoy my hobby (passion) and make enough to cover the expenses.
Anything above expenses is just a wondeful plus.

actually i was going to take a picture of the motley i got from you but the lil booger is in blue phase again. i dunno if these pinkies have super juice in them or what. but hes growing like crazy!!! i promise one day i'll get him at the right time to take pics! and i am almost at the end of the "i want" list just a few odds and ends to have mates for the others. thanks for helping me feel better
