Unfortunately, I lost my tortoise at about 2:30AM this New Year's morning. He had been recovering from a URI, and was doing quite well to what we could see. Both of his check ups earlier in the day had revealed clear breathing, and no runny nose. He even ate a good bit of mustard greens. Unfortunately, when I checked on him after the festivities, he had passed away and laid in his sterile enclosure like a peaceful tortoise at rest. I will always miss Hank, as he was my very first tortoise, and I tried ever so hard to give him a good home, with optimal conditions for his survival. Unfortunately, this time, it was not enough.

What a way to start the year, huh?
You did your best & gave him a good home,
still, I'm sorry for your loss.

Not many tortoise get an obituary notice as fine as Hank's.

I'm very sorry he didn't make it. It is a good thing you took him to the vet and made your best effort to treat his ailment. There was nothing more you could have done for him.

However long it takes you, I hope you decide to continue working with tortoises.

RIP Hank

I'm planning on getting another during the spring, because I have really grown to appreciate them. I don't think I can survive without having one of these great little guys around.

I know, sadly from experience. how much it sucks to lose a tortoise after I've done everything I could to give it the very best.

Very sorry to hear that Andrew. I know how saddening it is to do everything you can and still have things not work out as you'd hoped.

Take heart. Hank understood that you were his friend. Animals know.

I'll look forward to posts about your new tort in the spring!

Andrew,
It is so sad to loose a tort. I lost one in October; I carry his picture on my cell phone. Im glad to hear your joy for them will carry on! I still have two who are my best buddies and we're expecting another one in a couple weeks!
