Fox Snake question

captnemo Jan 01, 2007 09:45 PM

Hi-
I recently acquired a snake which I am 90% sure is an Eastern Fox Snake. Are there any other snakes similar in size and pattern that also have a divided anal plate that anyone can think of (I'm much more knowledgeable about pythons than colubrids) What would be the best forum for this particular question? Also, does anyone have any idea as to the market value of this species, as I probably won't be keeping it. Thanks in advance.
Mike

It would be helpful to know how you acquired the snake, for example, is the snake wild-caught?,and if so from what location in the country ect.ect. Is there any way you can post a photo?......if for some reason you cannot get a photo posted of the snake, then you can do an "image search" on "Google" or "Yahoo" for example and you can very easily find out that way..........It's hard to say without seeing the snake, but if it resembles a cornsnake, and has many dark square/rectangular checkerboard shaped markings on the venter(belly/underside) with squarish shaped blotches on it's back, then it could very well be one of two subspecies of Fox Snake(Elaphe/Pantherophis vulpina). But it could also be a few other snakes as well. As far as pricing, this would depend on what subspecies, how nice looking, and how big the snake is to give any accuracy. If it is in fact a "normal" average Fox Snake, it would probably go for a few more dollars than a "normal" Cornsnake would of similar size, because they are not nearly as abundant as Cornsnakes are in todays market, although they are very closely related to them........hope this helped some,....................Doug

I'll try and post a photo if possible. I'm also unsure of the protected status of the Eastern Fox, so I'd like to check on that before posting a pic as well. The snake is about 4 - 5' long and is clearly an adult. It was received from a client who received it from a friend who bought it as a ball python....obviously not a snake guy! Everything I've seen on-line resembling it is either d. jani, d. deppei, or Eastern Fox. These snakes seem so varied in appearance, that I began to look a bit closer and noticed the divided anal plate. I've had corns, and that is definitely ruled out. The saddles are uniform in size and shape and black in color w/ some fading in the centers, and the backround color is a dirty beige. Their is no distinguishable belly pattern...it's cream colored dirtied up w/ melanin. Cool snake that likes to threaten, huff, and puff, and let's out a stench worse than any snake musk I've ever smelled! Thanks...I know it's kind of hard to give advice w/out all the info.
