My snake need a cagemate

ziggie Aug 08, 2003 08:36 PM

If I want to get another snake, same type, do they need to be atlease the same age? my bp is about 3 yrs old. Also I dont plan to have him/her mate (I still havent got him/her probe yet so I have no idea of the bp sex). So can male bp and another male bp get along in the same cage?

Males should never be housed together.

If both males are over 500grams or 1 year old they may/will combat.

It is not a good idea to house more than 1 ball per enclosure at any time with any sex combo. When housed together they may become stressed and end up being problem feeders.

NEVER house two ball pythons in the same enclosure.

If you need a few reasons why not to keep two ball pythons in the same enclosure, scroll down this Forum, and I'm sure you'll HUNDREDS of them.

rather than tell you its bad and not to do it, ill tell you WHY its bad and WHY not to do it. sure a few people have an ok time housing 2 snakes together, they are the vast minority. and the rule of NEVER housing 2 snakes together get blown out of the water if youre breeding.

some reasons why not to house snakes together...

stress, this can lead to a lack of feeding in an otherwise healthy animal, with ball pythons, which are easily stressed, it can happen faster and last longer.

diseases, this is a big concern, with things like IBD, you cant be too safe...this also leads to

PARASITES, mites, ticks, internal parasites...easily spread from one snake to another...nuff said!

now, the reason why youll see 2 snakes curled up together in the same cage, its really quite simple, both snakes want to be in the best spot at the same time, so they both are, they dont like each other, they dont want each other there, snakes are solitary, that means they only come together under certain circumstances.

i hope i made things clearer than "NEVER house 2 snakes together"
